What is vitamin C?

Vitamin C has many important functions in the body. Vitamin C is primarily an antioxidant used to prevent infections, bruising, colds and flu, sinusitis, sore throats, blood clots, arthersclerosis, high blood pressure, physical and mental stress, weak immune system, cholesterol levels, liver toxicity and collagen formation. Vitamin C plays an important role in supporting immune function. As an antioxidant, Vitamin C helps neutralize harmful free radicals in cells.

Vitamin C helps produce collagen and other connective tissues in the heart and arteries, and helps convert cholesterol into bile acids. As a nutritional antioxidant, vitamin C also helps protect the human system-including the heart-from free-radical damage.

It's recommended that women consume 800 mcg and men consume 1000 mcg of vitamin A daily.

Food sources of vitamin C include: citrus fruits, cantaloupe, strawberries, tomatoes, broccoli, cabbage, melon, green pepper, dark green vegetables, potatoes.

Deficiency of Vitamin C

Vitamin C deficiency causes scurvy that is characterized by capillary fragility resulting in bruising and hemorrhaging, inflammation of the gums, loosening of the teeth, anemia.
