Essential Oils
What is Aromatherapy?
The term "Aromatherapy" derives from two words: aroma -
frangrance or smell, and therapy - treatment. Aromatherapy is the practice
of using volatile plant oils, including essential oils, for psychological
and physical well-being. Natural plant oils are applied in a variety of
ways, including massage, baths, and inhalations. These are ready absorbed
through the skin and have gentle physiological effects. Aromatherapy is
an especially effective treatment for stress-related problems and a variety
of chronic conditions.
What are Essential Oils?
Essential oil is a liquid that is generally distilled from the leaves,
stems, flowers, bark, roots, or other elements of a plant. These 100%
pure oils are neat, meaning they have not been processed or manipulated
in any way with solvents or other additives. Essential oils, contrary
to the use of the word "oil" are not really oily-feeling at all. Most
essential oils are clear, but some oils such as patchouli, orange and
lemongrass are amber or yellow in color. Essential oils contain the true
essence of the plant it was derived from. Essential oils are highly concentrated
and a little goes a long way.
Some of the popular oils used in aromatherapy today include chamomile,
lavender, rosemary, and tea tree.
Essential Oils Uses
Essential oils can be used in a number of ways, but they almost always
require dilution with something. They can be diluted with water or carrier
oils (almond oil, apricot kernel oil, grapeseed oil).
Essential Oils can be used for inhalation therapy, massage, room freshening,
perfumes, bathing.
