What are Joints?

A joint is the location at which two bones make contact (articulate). Joints are constructed to both allow movement and provide mechanical support. All of the bones, except the hyoid bone in the neck, form a joint.

Types of joints:

• Fibrous joints connect bones without allowing any movement. The bones of your skull and pelvis are held together by fibrous joints.
• Cartilaginous joints are joints in which the bones are attached by cartilage. These joints allow for only a little movment, such as in the spine or ribs.
• Synovial joints allow for much more movement than cartilaginous joints. Cavaties between bones in synovial joints are filled with synovial fluid. This fluid helps lubricate and protect the bones.

What is Arthritis?

Arthritis can affect any type of joint, but free moving synovial joints are the most affected.
Word 'Arthritis' means 'inflammation of a joint'. A simpler definition is 'damage to a joint (or joints)'.

Osteoarthritis is a chronic disorder of joint cartilage and surrouning tissues that is characterized by pain, stiffness, and loss of function.

Rheumatoid arthritis is an inflammatory arthritis in which joints, usually including those of the hands and feet, are inflamed, resulting in swelling, pain and often the destruction of joints.

Gout is a disorder that result from deposits of sodium urate crystals, which accumulate in the joints because of high blood levels of uric acid, leading to attacks of painful joint inflammation.
